Instruction in our percussion program is available to students interested in learning how to play the drums, cymbals, snare drum as well as many auxiliary percussion instruments such as tamborine, shakers, triangle, bells, woodblocks, and more. As percussionists are often called upon to perform a variety of different and unique instruments, it's difficult to become bored as there is always a fun new instrument to explore and add to your resume!
As a drummer and percussionist, one of the keys to success when auditioning for/joining a band or ensemble is knowledge of and the ability to play many different grooves. In that spirit, your drum teacher will show you how to play rock, pop, country, jazz, latin, rock, and more! Of course, if you're only interested in focusing on one particular style, that's perfectly fine as well!
Students may choose from a weekly 30, 45, or 60 minute private lesson. Students will learn to play the songs and drum solos they love from their favorite bands. Lessons will include training in stick control basics, matched grip vs traditional grip, paradiddles, percussion notation, building limb independence, constructing solos, and more. Our program provides a well-rounded/comprehensive education in percussion for drummers of any level.
In addition to weekly private lessons, our drum students also have option of attending a weekly enrichment lab of their choice. Our lab classes are held in small groups for 45 minutes each week, and classes include Music Theory, Vocal Ensemble, Songwriting, Zoom Theory, Drama Improv, and Choreography. There is no additional tuition or fees for our enrichment classes, and attendance is completely optional. Students who are able to attend enjoy making new friends and sharing their love of the performing arts together in a fun, relaxed group environment! See our current Enrichment Lab schedule via the link below!
At the Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts, we take pride in offering the best drum lessons for students of all ages, and with a rich history dating back to 1978, our commitment to cultivating talent shines through in every beat! From young aspiring beginners to adults seeking to enhance their skills, our drum program is crafted to provide a dynamic and engaging learning experience. What makes LAAPA's drum lessons stand out is our dedication to personalized instruction as we understand that each student has unique musical goals in mind. From fundamental techniques to advanced rhythms, our comprehensive curriculum guarantees that both kids and adults not only learn to play the drums proficiently but also develop a deep appreciation for the art of percussion.
Drum lessons are offered at the Covington School of Music (conveniently located in downtown Covington), Mandeville School of Music & Dance (conveniently located near I-12 in Northern Mandeville/South Covington) River Ridge School of Music & Dance (conveniently located just outside of Metairie/Kenner and a short drive from New Orleans via the Earhart Expressway).
All of our drum students have many opportunities to perform! Each year we hold recitals in June and December open to all students. Our drum students are also invited to participate in one of many jazz and rock ensembles at LAAPA! Catch one of our drummers performing below at a recent recital! For even more performances, visit our video page here.
Drum sets are available in all of our drum studios, so students just need to bring a pair of drum sticks to class. Beginning drummers usually start with a pair of 5A drum sticks. Students can learn on either acoustic or electric drum sets. Well-built acoustic sets will generally outlast electric sets which tend to have parts fail over time and need specialized replacements that may be difficult to find if the model is discontinued. If you are concerned about sound in your home, consider low volume cymbals and mesh drum heads! New students do not necessarily need a full set right away and may begin with either a drum pad or snare drum. What is needed will depend on the age of the student and his/her goals, so please discuss with your teacher at your first lesson! Your teacher will recommend materials including media and books that may either be found freely online or are available for purchase. At your first lesson, please discuss your goals and stylistic interests with your teacher so that you can have a customized lesson plan in place! If you have your own music books, media, etc. please bring them to your first lesson!
